The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf

/양치기 소년과 늑대/ 이솝우화

 

A young shepherd boy watched over his sheep every day

while they ate grass.

He passed the time by seeing how far he could throw a rock,

or by looking at the clouds to see how many animal shapes he could find.

양치기 소년은 매일 매일 그의 양들이 풀을 뜯고 있는동안 양들을 보았다.

양치기 소년은 그가 얼마나 멀리 돌을 던질수 있는지 알아보거나

구름들 속에서 얼마나 많은 동물 모양 구름을

찾을수 있는지를 알아보며 시간을 보냈다.

 

He liked his job well enough,

but he longed for a little excitement.

So, one day he decided to play a trick

on the people of the village.

"Wolf! Wolf! Help!" he shouted as loud as he could.

그는 그의 직업을 좋아했지만 좀더 흥미로운 일을 원했다.

그래서 하루는 마을 사람들에게 속임수를 쓰기로 결심했다.

늑대다! 늑대다! 도와줘요!

그는 그가 낼 수 있는 최대한의 크기로 소리쳤다.

 

Hearing the shepherd boy's cry,

the people in the village picked up pitchforks

and clubs and ran to help the boy save his sheep.

When they arrived, they saw no wolf.

They saw only the shepherd boy, doubled up with laughter.

양치기 소년의 외침을 들은 마을 사람들은 갈퀴와 방망이를 들고

소년과 양들을 구하기 위해 달려왔다.

그들이 도착했을때 그들은 늑대가 없는것을 보았다.

그들은 웃으면서 양치기 소년을 보았다..

 

"I fooled you. I fooled you," he giggled.

내가 너에게 속았구나, 내가 너에게 속았어 그들은 킬킬 댔다.

The people thought this was a very bad joke, indeed.

They warned him not to call again, unless he was certain he saw a wolf.

사람들은 이게 아주 나쁜 농담이라고 생각했다.

그럼에도 그들은 소년에게 확실히 늑대를 보지 않으면

다시 부르지 말라는 경고를 하지 않았따.

 

The next week, the boy again played his trick on the villagers.

"Wolf! Wolf!" he cried out.

그 다음주 소년은 또다시 마을사람들에게 속임수를 썼다.

늑대다 늑대다 소년이 소리쳤다.

Once again, the people ran to his aid, and once again,

they found no wolf-only the boy, laughing at them.

다시한번 사람들은 그를 돕기위해 달려왔고 또다시 늑대를 발견할수 없었고.

그저 소년에게 웃음을 지을뿐이었다.

 

The next day, a wolf really did come down

from the hills to help itself to a few fat sheep.

"Wolf! Wolf!" yelled the shepherd boy with all the power in his lungs.

그 다음날 정말로 늑대가 언덕으로부터

몇마리의 살찐 양을 사냥하기위해 언덕에서 내려왔고

양치기 소년은 있는 힘껏 늑대다! 늑대다! 하고 소리질렀다.

The people of the village heard his shouts for help and smiled.

"He's trying to trick us again," they said, " but this time we won't be fooled."

마을사람들은 소년의 도와달라는 외침을 듣고 그저 웃으며

"그가 또다시 속임수를 쓰는군""우리는 속지 않을거야"라고 말했다.

 

Finally, the boy stopped shouting. He knew the villagers didn't believe him.

He knew they wouldn't come.

All he could do was stand back and watch the wolf kill his sheep.

마침내 소년은 고함을 멈췄고

그는 마을 사람들이 자신을 믿지 않는다는 것을 알게되었다.

그는 마을 사람들이 오지 않을 것이라는것을 알았다.

소년은 그저 뒤로 물러나서 늑대가 자신의 양을 죽이는 것을 볼 수 밖에 없었다.

 

(People who tell lies find it hard to be believed,

even when they tell the truth.)

거짓말을 하는 사람들은 신뢰를 찾기 힘들다

심지어 그들이 사실을 말한다 할지라도..
