The Milkmaid and Her Pail / 이솝우화

 

A Milkmaid had been out to milk the cows

and was returning from the field

with the shining milk pail balanced nicely on her head.

As she walked along,

her head was busy with plans for the days to come.

"This good, rich milk," she said, "will give me plenty of cream.

The butter I make will take to market,

and with the money I get for it I will buy a lot of eggs for hatching.

How nice it will be when they are all hatched

and the yard is full of fine young chicks!

Then when May day comes I will sell them,

and with the money I'll buy a lovely new dress to wear to the fair.

All the young men will look at me.

They will come and try to make love to me,

but I shall very quickly send them about their business!"

As she thought of how she would settle that matter,

she tossed her head scornfully,

and down fell the pail of milk to the ground.

And all the milk flowed out,

and with it vanished butter and eggs

and chicks and new dress and all the milkmaid's dreams!

 

Do not count your chickens before they are hatched!

어느 젖 짜는 여자는 젖소에게서 우유를 짜기 위해 나가서

그녀 머리위에 균형 있게 잘 들려진

번쩍이는 우유 통을 가지고 들에서 돌아오는 중이었다.

그녀가 길을 따라 걷고 있을 때,

그녀 머리는 돌아오는 내내

(앞으로 해야 할) 계획들로 인해 바빴다.

"이 훌륭하고 풍부한 우유는 많은 양의 크림을 가져다 줄거야.

내가 만든 버터를 시장에 가져다가 팔아서 얻은 돈으로

부화할 수 있는 많은 계란을 사야지.

그것들 모두 다 부화해서 마당에 건강한 새끼 병아리들로

가득 찼으면 얼마나 좋을까!

그러면 장날에 그걸 내다 팔아서 번 돈으로 축제마당에 갈 때

입을 아름다운 새 옷을 사야지.

모든 젊은이들은 나를 바라볼 거야.

그들은 와서 나와 사귀려고 애를 쓸거야,

하지만 나는 신속하게 그들이 작업 걸지 못하도록 해야지!".

자신이 어떻게 그 문제를 해결할 것인가 생각하면서

그녀는 자학적으로 자신의 머리를 들었고

땅에 우유 통을 떨어뜨리고 말았다.

해서 우유가 통째로 흘러나왔고,

그로 인해 (그걸로) 버터를 만들거나 계란을,

새 옷을 그리고 젖 짜는 여인의 모든 꿈들이 사라져 버렸다.

 

병아리가 부화되기 전에 병아리를 세지 말라!
