The Hare and The Tortoise/ 이솝우화

 

A Hare was making fun of the Tortoise one day for being so slow.

"Do you ever get anywhere?" he asked with a mocking laugh.

"Yes," replied the Tortoise, "and I get there sooner than you think.

I'll run you a race and prove it."

The Hare was much amused at the idea of running a race with the Tortoise,

and for the fun of the thing he agreed.

So the Fox, who had consented to act as judge,

marked the distance and started the runners off.

The Hare was soon far out of sight,

and to make the Tortoise feel very deeply

how ridiculous it was for him to try a race with a Hare,

he lay down beside the course to take a nap

until the Tortoise should catch up.

The Tortoise meanwhile kept going slowly but steadily,

and, after a time, passed the place where the Hare was sleeping.

But the Hare slept on very peacefully;

and when at last he did wake up, the Tortoise was near the goal.

The Hare now ran fast but he could not overtake the Tortoise in time.

 

The race is not always to the swift!

 

토끼와 거북이

 

한 토끼가 어느 날

너무 느리다고 거북이를 놀리고 있었다.

"너는 어디라도 도달해 본적이 있니?" 라고

그는 조롱 섞인 웃음을 띠며 물었다.

"그래, 나는 네가 생각하는 것보다

훨씬 빨리 그곳에 다다를 수 있어.

너와 경주해서 그걸 증명해 보이지." 라고

그 거북이는 대답했다.

토끼는 거북이와 경주를 한다는 생각에 너무나 웃겼고

재미있을 것 같아서 동의했다.

해서 판정을 해 줄 것으로 (둘 다) 동의했던 여우가

거리를 표시하고 그 주자들을 출발시켰다.

토끼는 곧 안보일 정도로 멀어져 갔고

토끼와 달리기 시합을 하는 것이 얼마나 어리석은 것인가

깊이 느끼게 하도록

그(=토끼)는 거북이 자신을 따라 잡을 때까지

계속 경주로 옆에서 낮잠을 자기 위해 누웠다.

한편 그 거북은 느리나 쉬지 않고 계속 갔고 잠시 후,

토끼가 자고 있는 장소를 지나쳤다.

그러나 그 토끼는 매우 편하게 자고 있었고

마침내 그가 잠에서 깨었을 때,

그 거북은 골인 점 근처에 있었다.

토끼는 서둘러 달렸으나 시간 내에

그 거북을 따라잡을 수가 없었다.

 

경주는 항상 빠른 자가 이기는 것은 아니다!
