the Wolf And the Lamb
늑대와 아기 양
WOLF, meeting with a Lamb astray from the fold,
resolved not to lay violent hands on him,
but to find some plea to justify to the Lamb the Wolf's right to eat him.
무리로 부터 벗어나 길을 잃은 양을 만난 늑대는
힘을 쓰지 않고 잡아먹을수 있는 권리를 정당화 시킬 수 있는 구실을 찾기로 결심했다.
He thus addressed him: "Sirrah, last year you grossly insulted me."
그래서 늑대는 양에게 말을 걸었다: "이봐, 작년에 넌 날 심하게 모욕했어."
"Indeed," bleated the Lamb in a mournful tone of voice, "I was not then born."
"설마," 양은 "저는 그때 태어나지도 않았는걸요." 라며 슬픈 목소리로 울며 말했다.
Then said the Wolf, "you feed in my pasture."
그러자 늑대가 "너는 내 풀밭에서 풀을 뜯어 먹잖아..라고 말했다.
"No, good sir," replied the Lamb, "I have not yet tasted grass."
"아니에요, 늑대님, 전 아직 풀을 맛보지도 못했어요."라고 양은 대답했다.
Again said the Wolf, "You drink of my well."
다시 늑대가 "넌 나의 우물물을 마셨어" 라고 말했다.
"No," exclaimed the Lamb, "I never yet drank water,
for as yet my mother's milk is both food and drink to me."
"아니요, 전 아직 물을 마신 적이 없어요.
왜냐하면 아직까지 저는 엄마의 젖을 먹기 때문이죠..라며 양은 외쳤다.
Upon which the Wolf seized him and ate him up, saying,
"well! I won't remain supperless, even though you refute every one of my reputations."
그러자 늑대는 "내 비난 하나하나에 네가 반박하더라도
난 저녁식사를 굶진 않을 거야"라며 그 양을 잡아먹었다.
The tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny.
폭군은 언제나 자신의 폭정에 대한 구실을 찾을 것이다.
