수탉과 여우

 

 

 

The Cock and The Fox/ 이솝우화

 

One bright evening as the sun was sinking on a glorious world

a wise old Cock flew into a tree to roost.

Before he composed himself to rest,

he flapped his wings three times and crowed loudly.

But just as he was about to put his head under his wing,

his eyes caught a flash of red and a glimpse of a long pointed nose,

and there just below him stood the Fox.

"Have you heard the wonderful news?"

cried the Fox in a very joyful and excited manner.

"What news?" asked the Cock very calmly.

But he had a curious feeling inside him,

for he was very much afraid of the Fox.

"Your family and mine and all other animals

have agreed to forget their differences and live in peace

and friendship from now on forever. Just think of it!

I simply cannot wait to embrace you!

Do come down, dear friend, and let us celebrate the joyful event."

"How grand!" said the Cock. "I certainly am delighted at the news.

" But he spoke in an absent way, and stretching up on tiptoes,

seemed to be looking at something afar off.

"What is it you see?" asked the Fox a little anxiously.

"Why, it looks to me like a couple of Dogs coming this way.

They must have heard the good news and . . ."

But the Fox did not wait to hear more. Off he started on a run.

"Wait," cried the Cock. "Why do you run? The Dogs are friends of your now!"

"Yes," answered the Fox. "But they might not have heard the news. Besides,

I have a very important errand that I had almost forgotten about."

The Cock smiled as he buried his head in his feathers and went to sleep,

for he had succeeded in outwitting a very cunning enemy.

 

The tricker is easily tricked!

찬란한 세상 위로 햇빛이 지고 있던 어느 화창한 저녁에,

지혜로운 늙은 수탉이 잠자리에 들기 위해 나무속으로 날아 들어갔다.

쉴곳을 만들기에 앞서,

그는 자신의 날개를 세번 푸득거리면 크게 소리를 질렀다.

그러나 마침 그가 막 자신의 날개 안으로 머리를 집어 넣는 순간,

빨간 불빛과 길고 뾰족한 코를 흘낏 보았고 자기 바로 밑에 여우가 서 있었다.

"놀랄만한 소식을 들어본 적이 있니?" 라고

그 여우는 매우 기쁘고 흥분된 모습으로 소리쳤다.

"무슨 소식?" 그 수탉은 매우 조용히 물었다.

그러나 그는 여우가 너무나 무서웠기 때문에 의심이 들었다.

"네 가족과 나의 가족 그리고 모든 동물들이 그들간의 차이를 잊고

지금부터 영원히 평화롭고 친하게 살기로 동의했어.

생각해 봐! 너를 받아들이기 위해 기다릴 수가 없어! 내려와라 친구야,

그리고 우리 함께 그 즐거운 사건을 축하하자."

"우와 대단하다! 그 소식을 들으니 정말로 기쁘다."라고 그 수탉은 말했다.

그러나 그는 아무 생각 없이 말했고,

발톱을 뻗은채 멀리 떨어져 있는 어떤 것을 바라보는 것처럼 보였다.

"네가 보고 있는 것이 뭐니?"라고 약간 걱정스럽게 그 여우는 물었다.

"와, 이 길로 두마리 개가 오는 것 같은데. 그것들도 이 좋은 소식을 들었나보다. 그리고...."

그러나 그 여우는 더이상 듣기 위해 기다리지 않았다. 그는 뛰기 시작했다.

"기다려, 왜 뛰니? 지금은 저 개들도 네 친구들이잖아!" 라고 그 수탉은 소리쳤다.

"그래, 그러나 그들은 그 소식을 듣지 못했어.

그 외에도 나는 내가 거의 잊고 있었던 아주 중요한 심부름이 있어."

매우 교활한 적을 뛰어난 위트로 물리쳤기에

그 수탉은 자신의 깃털안으로 머리를 파묻은 채 미소를 지으면 잠에 들었다.

 

남을 속이는 사람은 쉽게 속임을 당한다!
