Mercury And The Woodman (머큐리신과 나뭇꾼)/ 이솝우화

 

A Woodman was felling a tree on the bank of a river,

when his axe, glancing off the trunk,

flew out of his hands and fell into the water.

As he stood by the water's edge lamenting his loss,

Mercury appeared and asked him the reason for his grief;

and on learning what had happened,

'out of pity for his distress he dived into the river and,

bringing up a golden axe, asked him if that was the one he had lost.

The Woodman replied that it was not,

and Mercury then dived a second time,

and, bringing up a silver axe, asked if that was his.

"No, that is not mine either," said the Woodman.

Once more Mercury dived into the river, and brought up the missing axe.

The Woodman was overjoyed at recovering his property,

and thanked his benefactor warmly;

and the latter was so pleased with his honesty

that he made him a present of the other two axes.

 

When the Woodman told the story to his companions,

one of these was filled with envy of his good fortune

and determined to try his luck for himself.

So he went and began to fell a tree at the edge of the river,

and presently contrived to let his axe drop into the water.

Mercury appeared as before, and, on learning that his axe had fallen in,

he dived and brought up a golden axe, as he had done on the previous occasion.

Without waiting to be asked whether it was his or not the fellow cried,

"That's mine, that's mine," and stretched out his hand eagerly for the prize:

but Mercury was so disgusted at his dishonesty

 that he not only declined to give him the golden axe,

but also refused to recover for him the one he had let fall into the stream.

 

Honesty is the best policy.

 

 

한 나뭇꾼이 강둑에서 나무를 베고 있었다.

나무를 잘 못 쳐서, 그만 도끼를 놓쳐서 강물에 빠뜨리고 말았다.

도끼를 잃은 망연하게 강둑에 서 있을 때, 머큐리신이 나타나서,

왜 그리 비탄에 잠겨있는지 물었다. 이야기를 듣고 난 후,

그 비탄에서 구해주려고 강물에 들어가서 금도끼를 들고 나왔다.

 "이 도끼가 네 도끼냐?" 나뭇꾼은 아니라고 말했다.

다시 은도끼를 들고 나온 머큐리신은 다시 물었다.

"아니예요, 그것도 내것이 아닙니다."라고 나뭇꾼은 대답했다.

다시 그의 도끼를 갖고 나와서 건네주자 그 나뭇꾼은 크게 기뻐하였다.

그의 정직성에 감명받은 머큐리신은 금도끼와 은도끼도 함께 주었다.

 

그 나뭇꾼은 이 이야기를 동료들에게 말해주었고,

그 중 한 사람이 자기도 돈을 벌어볼 생각으로 강둑에 가서 그의 도끼를 빠뜨렸다.

머큐리신이 다시 나타나서 그의 사연을 듣고는 금도끼를 가지고 왔다.

머큐리신이 물어보기도 전에,

그 나뭇꾼은 "그것이 내가 빠뜨린 것이다"고 외치곤,

팔을 뻗어서 그것을 가지려 했다.

그러나 머큐리신은 그의 거짓에 염증을 느껴서 그것을 주지 않고

그가 빠뜨린 것도 꺼내주지 않은채 물로 들어가고 말았다.

 

정직이 최선의 정책이다.

전령신으로, 상업가와 농부,목동,도둑,여행가의 수호신.판이라는 아들이 있으며

날개달린 샌들,날개달린 모자,두마리의 뱀이 감싼 황금 지팡이를 가지고 다닌다.

제우스와 마이아의 아들.그의 상징은 수닭과 뱀이 감싼 지팡이이다.

 

태양의 첫 번째 아들인 수성(水星, Mercury)은 전령의 신에서 따왔는데,

로마인들은 힘과 미를 대표하고 신의 전령을 전하는 헤르메스(Hermes)를

머큐리(Mercury)라고 불렀다고 한다.

칼 세이건(Carl Edward Sagan, 1934~1996)은

수성을 신들의 심부름꾼인 머큐리라고 부른 것은

수성이 태양에서 멀리 떨어지는 일이 없고,

1초에 48㎞의 공전 속도로 행성 중에 가장 빨리 달리기 때문이라고 한다.

 

그래서 신의 소식을 빨리 전하는 심부름꾼이라는 뜻으로

 ‘머큐리’라는 이름이 붙게 되었다.
