시골쥐와 서울쥐 / 이솝

The Country Mouse and the Town Mouse

 

Once upon a time a Country Mouse who had a friend in town invited him,

for old acquaintance sake, to pay him a visit in the country.

The invitation being accepted in due form, the Country Mouse, though plain and rough

and somewhat frugal in his nature, opened his heart and store, i

n honor of hospitality and an old friend. There was not a carefully stored up morsel

that he did not bring forth out of his larder, peas and barley,

cheese-parings and nuts, hoping by quantity to make up

what he feared was wanting in quality, to suit the palate of his dainty guest.

The Town Mouse, condescending to pick a bit here and a bit there,

while the host say nobbleing a blade of barely-straw, at length exclaimed,

"How is it, my good friend, that you can endure the dullness of this unpolished life?

You are living like a tiad in a hole.

You can't really prefer these solitary rocks

and woods to streets teeming with carriages and men.

On my honor, you are wasting your time miserably here.

We must make the most of life while it lasts.

A mouse, you know, does not live for ever.

So come with me and I'll show you life and the town.

" Overpowered with such fine words

and so polished a manner, the Country Mouse assented,

and they set out together on their journey to town I

t was late in the evening when they crept stealthily into the city,

and midnight are they reached the great house,

where the Town Mouse took up his quarters.

Here were couches of crimson velvet, carvings in ivory,

everything in short that denoted wealth and luxury.

On the table were the remains of a splendid banquet,

to procure which all the choicest shops in the town

had been ransacked the day before.

 It was now the turn of the courtier to play the host,

he places his country friend on purple,

runs to and fro to supply all his wants,

 presses dish upon dish and dainty upon dainty,

and as though he were waiting on a king, tastes every course ere

he ventures to place it before his rustic cousin.

The Country Mouse, for his part,

affects to make homself quite at home and blesses the good fortune

that had wrought such a change in his way of life;

when, in the midst of his enjoyment,

as he is thinking with contempt of the poor fare he fas forsaken,

on a sudden the door flies open,

and a party of revellers returning from a late entertainment,

bursts into the room.

THe affrighted friends jump from the table in the greatest consternation

and hide themselves in the first corner they can reach.

No sooner do they venture to creep out again t

han the barking of dogs drives them back in still greater terror than before.

At length, when things seemed quite,

the Country Mouse stole out from his hiding place,

and bidding his ftiend good-by,

whispered in his ear, "Oh, my good sir,

 this fine mode of living may do for those who like it,

but gibe me my barely-bread in peace

and security before the daintiest feast where Fear and Care are in wainting."

 

시골쥐와 서울쥐

 

옛날, 서울에 친구를 가지고 있는 시골쥐가 오래 사귀어온 우의로써,

그 친구에게 시골에 놀러오라고 초대했다.

이 초대가 정식으로 받아들여져서,

시골쥐는 초라하고 거칠고 얼마간 검소한 성격이긴 했지만

옛친구에 대한 환영의 표시로

그의 마음은 물론 저장해 놓은 창고까지 개방했다.

까다로운 손님 입에 맞도록 질적으로 부족한 점은 없을까

염려되는 점은 양으로 메꾸어 보려고 생각하고,

시골쥐는 완두콩이나 보리, 치즈 조각이나 도토리 등,

그 저장해 놓은 식량 가운데서 정성들여 모아 놓은

그 어떤 한 조각도 끄집어내지 않는 것이 없었다.

서울쥐는 시골쥐가 앉아서 보리 지푸라기를 갉아먹고 있는 동안,

 이것 저것 아주 조금씩 입에 대 보는 것이었는데, 마침내 깜짝 놀란 듯이 말했다.

"자네, 어째서 이런 촌스런 생활의 답답함을 참고 지내나?

자네는 구멍 속에 틀어박힌 두꺼비처럼 지내고 있꾼 그래.

자네도 실은, 마차나 사람으로

가득 찬 서울의 큰 거리보다 이 쓸쓸한 바위라든가

숲 쪽이 더 좋을 리는 없을 테지.

자네는 정말, 여기에서 비참한 시간을 보내고 있는 거야.

우리들은 생명이 있는 한 되도록 즐기지 않으면 안 되나네.

왜냐하면 새앙쥐란 것은 언제까지든지 살아 있는 게 아니지 않아?

그러니까 나를 따라 서울로 가세.

그러면 진정한 생활이 무엇인지 서울이 어떤 곳인지 자네에게 보여 주겠네."

이러한 멋진 말과 고상한 태도에 넘어가서 시골쥐는 친구의 말을 따랐다.

둘은 함께 서울로 길을 떠났다.

그들이 서울에 남몰래 숨어든 것은 벌써 늦은 저녁 때이며,

서울쥐가 살고 있는 커다란 저택에 당도했을 무렵에는 한밤중을 지나 있었다.

거기에는 빨간 비로드 침대가 있고, 상아로 된 조각품이 있어서,

한 마디로 말해 부유와 사치를 보여 주는 것들이 뭐든지 다 갖추어져 있었다.

테이블 위에는 훌륭한 파티의 먹다 남은 음식이 놓여 있었는데,

그 음식상을 차리기 위해서는 전날 서울에서

가려 뽑은 상점들이 하나도 남김 없이 털렸던 것이었다.

이번에는 드디어 주인역을 하는 서울쥐의 차례였다.

그는 시골쥐를 붉은 자색빛 이부자리 위에 앉히고,

그가 원하는 것을 뭐든지 해 주려고 이리저리 돌아다니며 계속 음식을 내 주고,

맛있는 것을 권하고 그리고 왕의 시중이라도 드는 듯이

맛있는 음식도 시골 친구 앞에 권하기에 앞서서

일일이 자기가 먼저 맛을 보는 것이었다.

시골쥐 역시 아주 마음이 느긋해진 태도를 보이며,

자기 생활에 이런 변화를 끼쳐 준 행운을 기뻐했다.

그런데 이렇게 자기가 내팽개치고 온

가난한 식사를 생각하며 한창 즐거움 속에 있을 때,

갑자기 방문이 활짝 열리고 한밤중의 파티로부터 돌아가려고 하는,

들뜬 사람들의 떠들어대는 무리가 우르르 방 안으로 몰려들어왔다.

깜짝 놀란 새앙쥐들은 몹시 당황하여 테이블 위에서 뛰어내려

제일 가까운 한구석으로 몸을 감추었다.

그런데 그들이 위험스레 밖으로 몰래 나오자마자 개들이 짖어대어 전보다도

더욱 기겁을 해서 쫓겨 돌아오고 말았다.

마침내 주위가 조용해졌다고 생각되었을 때 시골쥐가

그 피신처에서 몰래 빠져나와 친구에게 작별 인사를 하면서 귓전에다 속삭였다.

"오, 좋은 친구여, 이 훌륭한 생활은,

그것을 좋아하는 사람들에겐 충분히 좋을지도 모르지.

하지만 나에겐 공포와 근심이 기다리고 있는 산해 진미를 늘어 놓는 축제보다도

편안하게 아무런 위험도 없이 저 보리로 만든 빵이 먹고 싶네."
