The Bat And The Weasels (박쥐와 족제비)/ 이솝우화

 

 

A Bat fell to the ground and was caught by a Weasel,

and was just going to be killed and eaten when it begged to be let go.

The Weasel said he couldn't do that

because he was an enemy of all birds on principle.

"Oh, but," said the Bat, "I'm not a bird at all:

I'm a mouse." "So you are," said the Weasel,

"now I come to look at you"; and he let it go.

Some time after this the Bat was caught in

 just the same way by another Weasel,

and, as before, begged for its life.

 "No," said the Weasel, "I never let a mouse go by any chance."

"But I'm not a mouse," said the Bat; "I'm a bird."

 "Why, so you are," said the Weasel; and he too let the Bat go.

 

Look and see which way the wind blows before you commit yourself.

 

박쥐 한마리가 땅에 떨어져서 족제비에게 붙잡혔다.

죽임을 당하려는 순간 박쥐는 살려달라고 애원했다.

족제비는 말하기를 모든 새는 적이므로 살려줄수 없다고 했다.

박쥐는, "제발, 나는 새가 아니예요. 쥐예요" 라고 애원하며 말했다.

"그래?, 흠, 그렇구나" 하고 보내주었다.

좀 지난 어느날, 그 박쥐는 다른 족제비에게 다시 붙잡혔는데,

다시 살려달라고 애원했다.

 "안되, 난 쥐는 살려두지 않아."라고 족제비가 말했다.

"난 쥐가 아니예요. 나는 새예요."라고 박쥐가 애원하며 말했다.

"응?, 그렇구나" 하고 족제비는 동의하곤 그를 보내주었다.
