The North Wind And The Sun (북쪽 바람과 태양) / 이솝우화

 

 

A dispute arose between the North Wind and the Sun,

each claiming that he was stronger than the other.

At last they agreed to try their powers upon a traveller,

to see which could soonest strip him of his clothes.

 

북쪽 바람과 태양이 서로 자기가 더 힘이 세다고 시비가 붙었다.

결국 한 여행자를 보곤 그의 외투를 먼저 벗겨서 센쪽을 가리기로 하였다.

 

The North Wind had the first try; and, gathering up all his force for the attack,

he came whirling furiously down upon the man,

and caught up his clothes as though he would wrest it from him by one single effort:

but the harder he blew, the more closely the man wrapped it round himself.

 

먼저 북쪽 바람의 차례였다.

그는 모든 힘을 모아서 여행자에게 바람을 불어서 외투를 벗기려 했는데,

그는 옷을 꽉 붙잡고 놓지를 않아서 결국 실패하고 말았다.

 

Then came the turn of the Sun.

At first he beamed gently upon the traveller, who soon unclasped his clothes

and walked on with it hanging loosely about his shoulders:

then he shone forth in his full strength, and the man,

before he had gone many steps, was glad to throw his clothes right off

and complete his journey more lightly clad.

 

Persuasion is better than force.

 

이제 태양의 차례가 되었다.

그는 먼저 여행자에게 부드러운 햇볓을 쐬게 하였더니,

얼마 안 있어서 여행자는 꽉 잡았던 옷을 느슨하게 풀고 그의 어깨에 걸고 걸어갔다.

태양이 다시 강렬하게 내리쬐니,

그 여행자는 얼마 안가서 그의 옷을 벗어던지고 옷을 더 얇게 하고는 여행길을 계속 갔다.

 

무력보다 설득이 더 낫다
